Creatures of Habit
by Grace Willis
People keep saying
“I can’t wait. I just can’t wait to get back
to normal.”
I pause at the statement,
wonder if there was a normal before
before World War I,
World War II.
I pause at the memory I’ll never know
of normal before Polio, before Cholera,
the automobile, The Great Depression.
I wonder if Eve said to Adam
“I can’t wait. I can’t wait for things to get back
to normal,”
standing there, outside of Eden.
