Poem 33
by Babatunde Waliyullah Adesokan
It is important to mention
That the last time my mother cried
She left shadows in her scarf. So, I
Unearth the grief & plant it into
fine braids. The only way towards
salvation is to lie like soft bromes
drying into hay. Or stagger towards
the sunset in silence. This town is
full of mothers in search of smiles
& fathers who tread the miles to make
& unmake more mothers.
Ain’t we like a struggling cockroach
in the grip of a tenacious ant? When
out of trouble, we vaunt like the
tiny triumph is a sun that never sets,
a brightness that will not grey, until:
a
puddle
swallows a cow
